There are many options for getting to Chiang Mai from the different cities, since it is one of the essential destinations in the visit to Thailand. Getting to this city is easy, thanks to the variety of transportation options available from different parts of the country. Most people will do it from Bangkok or Ayutthaya, but we did it from Chiang Rai. Here we tell you about our experience and the different options depending on how you plan your route.

From Ayutthaya
Travel from Ayutthaya to Chiang Mai is a very popular route for travelers exploring northern Thailand. We tell you about the different options to make this journey.
By train ✅
This is probably the most comfortable and authentic option. Trains that go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai pass through Ayutthaya so you can go up there directly. There are day and night trains, but the ones that nocturnal are more practical because you can sleep on the way and save one night's accommodation. The trip lasts about 10-12 hours and prices vary between 10 y 25 € depending on the class you choose. Book early if you prefer a comfortable berth.
By bus
From Ayutthaya you can take a bus to Chiang Mai, although it may involve a transfer in Bangkok or at an intermediate station. The total journey may take between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the prices are similar to those of the train, between 10 y 20 €. If you choose this option, check the schedules, as there are no direct buses all day long. We took a bus from Ayuthaya to Chiang Rai and we were very comfortable.

In high season book in advance your transports (a couple of days is enough)! We ran out of the bus we wanted and we had to change a little bit the bus we wanted planning.
From Bangkok
Reach Chiang Mai from Bangkok is simple and offers several options depending on your budget, time and preferences. Here are the main alternatives for this route of about 700 km:
By air ✅
This is the fastest and most convenient way. There are numerous airlines that operate daily flights from the Don Mueang Airport or the Suvarnabhumi Airport to Chiang Mai. The trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the prices are usually between 20 y 50 € per way if you book in advance. Also, Chiang Mai airport is close to the center, so getting to your accommodation will be quick and easy.
By train
If you have more time and want a different experience, the train is a great option. The night trains are the most popular, as they allow you to save a night's accommodation. There are different classes, from economy seats to beds in air-conditioned compartments. The journey time is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and prices vary between 10 y 30 € depending on the class. Book in advance, especially in high season.
By bus
Buses are a economic option which also allow you to save a night's accommodation as there are some overnight options. From the Mo Chit bus station Several companies depart to Chiang Mai, with standard and VIP bus options. Prices range from 15 y 25 € and the trip lasts between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m..
From Chiang Rai
Moving from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai is easy and quite fast thanks to the proximity between the two cities. The distance is about 190 km and you have several options to make this journey:
By bus ⭐
It is the most popular and economical option. From Chiang Rai bus station there are direct buses to Chiang Mai with different companies, like Green Bus which is the best known. There are standard, VIP and deluxe options, and the trip takes between 3 and 4 hours. Prices range from 6 y 15 € depending on the type of bus you choose. VIP buses are usually more comfortable and air-conditioned, so they are ideal for the Thai heat. This is the option we choose and we recommend 100%.
By car or motorcycle
If you like to drive, renting a car or motorcycle is a great alternative to enjoy the scenery. The trip takes about 3-4 hours depending on the stops. The main road is in good condition, and the road offers beautiful views of mountains and villages. It is a great option if you want to stop at intermediate points.
From Sukhothai
If you have enough days and you have included Sukhothai in your route we tell you how to get to Chiang Mai. There are not as many options as from Bangkok or Chiang Rai, but it is still a simple journey.
By bus ✅
The most practical and economical way. From the Sukhothai bus station There are direct buses to Chiang Mai several times a day. The journey takes between 5 and 6 hours and prices are around 8-12 € depending on the type of bus (VIP buses are more comfortable and have air conditioning). Buses are usually on time.
By car or motorcycle
If you want to explore at your own pace, renting a car or motorcycle is an ideal alternative. The trip takes about 4-5 hours and the roads are in good condition. This option allows you to stop in small towns or interesting places along the way. Of course, if you opt for the motorcycle, make sure it is a model suitable for long trips and always wear a helmet and sun protection.
Important tips
- Book in advance in high season Air, train and bus tickets tend to sell out quickly in high season (November to February) or during festivals such as Loy Krathong or Songkran. If you plan to travel on these dates, be sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid surprises.
- Check schedules and reservations on the 12GoAsia web site. It is a little more expensive than buying tickets in person but it assures you a seat reservation without having to be there in advance.
- Consider comfort on long journeys If the trip is more than 5 hours, it is worth investing a little more in options such as night train with berths or VIP buses. It will save you hassle and you will arrive more rested in Chiang Mai.
