What to see in Cáceres

ceres is a World Heritage City and also, it is and has been the scene of filming of movies and series in which appear many magical places and essential sites that you will have to visit. Without going any further, the old part of Cáceres and Los Barruecos are two of the most famous locations in which several chapters of Game of Thrones.

What to see or do in Cáceres is a decision that will depend on the time you have available. But of course, it will be a complicated choice if you do not have at least two days. Walking around and visiting the city and its corners will surely involve more than these two days, let alone if you want to visit the surroundings, as there are many cities and places within a radius of less than 60 km that are worth visiting.

For all these reasons, we encourage you to book at least one weekend to have a first contact with what we assure you will be, love at first sight. That said, we begin the suggestions of the places you can not miss.

Must-see places to visit in Cáceres

1. The Main Square of Cáceres

To contemplate this cobbled square, presided over by the town hall, all you need to do is sit on the stairs leading up to the Arch of the Star, which is the access to the monumental city, where impressive walls, towers, walls and buildings await you. In addition, if you coincide in your visit with the medieval market of the three cultures or the festival of popular and ethnic music Womad of Cáceres you will enjoy your stay twice as much.

Here are some of the most famous points of interest in the city of Cáceres visible from the main square. They are all marked in the map of Cáceres in a day that we leave you at the end of the article:

  • The Tower of Bujaco.  One of the most striking buildings in the Plaza Mayor, it is located protecting one of the northwest flanks of the monumental city of Cáceres.
  • The grass tower. It is a construction of the XII century, it is a tower albarrana of Arab construction. It is part of one of the towers of the wall of Cáceres that can be seen in the Plaza Mayor of the city.
  • Los Balbos Forum. It is a space located south of the Plaza Mayor that is attached to the wall of the monumental city.

2. Santa Maria Square

Through the Arco de la Estrella you will access the Plaza de Santa María, where you will find yourself face to face with some of the most famous monuments of the city of Cáceres:

  • The Co-cathedral of Santa Maria. You can access the interior through two different doors, one on each side of the building. Inside you will find a beautiful temple with a spiral staircase that can be climbed to see the old part of Cáceres from above.
  • Carvajal Palace. The Carvajal Palace is a jewel with Gothic and Renaissance elements. You can visit the interior as well as the garden and the courtyard. The garden of the Palacio de Carvajal is well known in Cáceres for hosting a centennial fig tree.

We recommend you to visit the nativity scene in the cloister of the Palacio de Carvajal. An essential visit.

  • Palacios de Los Golfines. A few steps beyond the arch of the Star, gateway to the monumental city of Cáceres, we find this palace, whose construction, in the late fifteenth century, corresponds to Alfonso Golfín, a nobleman loyal to the cause of the Catholic Monarchs.

3. Plaza de las veletas

Located in the highest part of the monumental city. There we can find ehe provincial museum, better known as the cistern of Cáceres.

This building houses the Cistern It is the most important of all Cáceres and is one of the largest and best preserved in the world. It is worth the visit as it is impressive to be able to go down to contemplate the area where the water is stored.

4. San Mateo Square

The Plaza de San Mateo is another place to visit in Cáceres. There you will find the Museum of Weapons of the Palace of Diego de Ovando.

Be sure to visit the  San Mateo Church located in the same square and the best place to take one of the most typical photos of Cáceres, from which you can see the impressive ivy-covered walls of a tower.

Right next door is the most famous two Michelin star restaurant in Cáceres, the Atrium. It is certainly not for all budgets but the visit is a unique experience. If you don't feel like spending that kind of money, but would still like to try something from the owners of the Atrio, a little further up you have a more economical option called the tower of Sande that not so many people know and has a much more affordable menu.

In this square you will also find the Convent of San Pablo, where you can buy homemade sweets made by the nuns.

5. The Jewish Quarter

Walking through this neighborhood you can sense the Jewish past of the city. The area is known as the Jewish Quarter and in its streets, you will find very curious dwellings adapted to the changes in the level of the land.

Don't leave there without passing by the Don Alvaro's alley that intersects with the Pereros Street or by the Olivar de la Judería where the one known as the the most beautiful bench in Cáceres, because from here you have spectacular views of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mountain, which we will show you later.

You should also visit El Nun's Corner and the Hermitage of San Antonio which was the ancient synagogue of the city.

6. Visiting the Helga de Alvear Museum

Once you have finished your visit to the old town, you can go to the museum Helga de Alvear located very close to this area. Tickets can be purchased in the following ways free easily there or at your webHowever, we recommend that you check before you go to see if there are any tickets left because on the busiest days it tends to fill up.

This well-known Cáceres museum has not been in the city for very long, but it has already made a place for itself among the essential plans to make when visiting Cáceres.

7. Prince's Park

Not everything is going to be visits to museums and buildings, during your stay in the city, if you enjoy the green areas, it is essential to visit the Prince's Park. Ideal for strolling or outdoor sports.

It is located very close to the center of the city and it is a place where you can find  unique to visit and get to know all the tree and plant species that grow and adorn the green areas. It can be accessed from another park that runs along two central streets in Cáceres, the Cánovas Park we will tell you about in the following.

In the Prince's Park, in addition to walking or playing sports, you can walk with children and sit while they ride on the swings or jump on a small zip line in the sand park.

Walking to the top you will find a greenhouse with different species of plants, the visit is free and quite fast as it is not very big, but it is a curious activity.

8. Take a walk around the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mountain.

This is the site of the patron saint of the city of Caceres the Virgin of the Mountain. The sanctuary is located in the Sierra de la Mosca at an altitude of 600 m.

The route up can be done either on foot, making a route of medium difficulty (due to the unevenness of ascent) or by car. Parking at the top is free and very easy, it never gets crowded.

It is a point quite frequented by the people of Cáceres for its impressive panoramic views of the city.

9. Visit the Rodeo Park

It is a fairly large park with lots of green areas and several ponds with nightly light shows and some fish. It is not in the center of the city, but you can walk there even from the monumental area.
There are plenty of trees under which to sit and rest, and there is also some chiringuito  to recharge your batteries after an exhausting day of sightseeing through the cobblestone streets of the city.
It has skate and roller skating rinks and from some of its benches you can have a view of the old part of the city.

10. Pedrilla House Museum and Guayasamín Museum

If you have enjoyed the Rodeo Park, very close by you will find the Pedrilla House Museum which despite not being one of the most important museums in the city, it is worth it just to see the gardens that surround it. In this place, if you travel during the summer season, you can enjoy free evening concerts.

11. Strolling through the Cánovas park.

The promenade of Canovas also known as the Cánovas Park,  is the most famous street in Cáceres and it is very likely that walking through the center you will find it. It is a promenade that runs between two main streets and will take you from the Cruz de los Caídos to Pintores street. If you are staying in the area You will almost certainly have to take it to go down to the most modern part of the city to get to the old part.

This walk, although more urban than the Rodeo Park, is characterized by its green areas and many trees. There is a pond and an old fountain preserved in very good condition. Exhibitions and stalls are usually located in Cánovas during the book fair, when the "Feria del Libro" is held medieval market the Womad or the tapa week.

12. Visit the caves of Maltravieso

The caves of Maltravieso are located within the city, close to one of the exits from Cáceres to Sierra de Fuentes or Montánchez (a place to visit, not only for the ham that is produced and dried in the mountains, but also for the majestic castle that presides over the village. 13. Los Barruecos and the Game of Thrones route.

Once the visits to all these places of interest are finished, if you like to visit the nature  and you are fans of the series Game of Thrones or the House of the Dragon If you are in the area, you cannot leave without a quick visit to the natural scenery where some of the episodes of these series have been filmed.

Once there you can make the famous Game of Thrones route which will take you through some of the scenarios that were used during the filming of the series. In addition, we recommend you to know:

  • The area of granite rocks where you will have the opportunity to see the storks that nest there.
  • The area of the ponds where you will see some cows and sheep roaming freely.
  • The Vostell Museum and some of his outdoor sculptures.
  • The cave paintings in a granite cave.
  • The nearest town, Malpartida de Cáceres, where you can enjoy the gastronomy of Extremadura.
