What to do in El Arquillo or Villa del Arco

The Villa del Arco or The Arch as it is known locally, is a hidden treasure in Extremadura. It is a tiny village that is part of Cañaveral, at the top of the mountain range with the same name, about 3 or 4 kilometers away.

What makes it truly special is its ability to transport you to the past, to a time when life went by at the rhythm of nature and traditions. Although only one family lives there today, Villa del Arco preserves its essence.

This place was abandoned in the 1960s due to emigration, but now it is a charming corner for those seeking tranquility and silence. Its winding cobblestone streets, where water flows, and the ancient stones of its houses create a landscape that invites you to disconnect from the routine and experience the feeling of oblivion.

The village consists of a dozen houses, five or six cobblestone streets, a church, a tiny cemetery and a century-old elm tree:

  • The streets of the people are cobblestones as in the 1960's, with the water of a creek flowing through some of them both in summer and winter.
  • The church located in the upper part of the village, still receives periodic visits from old neighbors and some hikers.
  • Just above the temple there is a small cemetery with three sadly desecrated tombs.
  • In a charming little square, a centennial elm The house is surrounded by the water of the stream that crosses the village.

Today, at the entrance of the village, you can find a rural house for sale or rent and a new municipal building for pilgrims. Of course, it is a haven of peace and tranquility ideal for those looking for a getaway away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
