Tips for traveling in Extremadura in summer
Avoid the central hours of the day
In July and August, the hottest hours tend to be between 13:00 and 18:00. Take advantage of the early morning and the end of the day to make cultural visits, routes or bathing in pools. At midday, it is best to seek shade, go for lunch or take a nap if you have accommodation nearby.
Stay close to nature, with a swimming pool or river
If you are looking for some freshness, we recommend staying in villages near gorges, reservoirs or with accommodations that have a swimming pool. There are many rural hotels, charming houses and shaded accommodations in areas such as La Vera, el Jerte, Las Hurdes or Sierra de Gata. If you are thinking about a city, here are some ideas of where to sleep:
Lightweight clothing, but prepared for walking
It is not necessary to wear hiking boots, but it is a good idea to wear comfortable and closed shoes if you are going to do routes through rocky areas or pools. It is also useful to have a quick-drying towel hat, cap, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle (in many places there are fountains).
Reservations if you are going to festivals or spas
In summer, festivals like the one in Mérida or Hervás fill towns and cities. If you want to go to a specific performance or stay near an event, it is best to book in advance. The same for the spas which may be in high demand in August.
Take advantage of the local gastronomy
In summer there are a lot of seasonal products: cherries, figs, gazpachos, cold dishes, etc. If you want to know what is worth trying, we leave you this guide:
