Route to Calderón Hondo
The Calderon Hondo is one of the most famous volcanoes of Fuerteventura and is also very close to Corralejo, where we stayed in the first part of our trip, so it was a must for us. From the top you have incredible views of the alignment of the volcano Bayuyo The group of volcanoes that made the island grow to the north.
The route departs from village of Lajares and the start is very well marked on Google Maps as "Start of hiking Lajares". It is a simple route but, as in many parts of this island, there is no shade at any point (sunscreen y cap essential).

The route is about 5km long and can be done in one hour hour and a half about although we took a little longer, about 2 hours, because we had a lot of fun upstairs with a surprise that we will tell you about later.
Our first steps lead us along a clearly marked trail with stones (photo below) that enters a malpaís The terrain is a terrain of sharp volcanic rocks and little worn by time. It is important to stay on the road to protect the natural environment. In front, the silhouette of Montaña Colorada stands imposing, next to Calderon Hondo two volcanic formations whose eruptions, dated about 50,000 years ago, expanded the surface of Fuerteventura by 110 km² to the north.

Continuing the road begins to rise gently, at the same time that begins to surround the volcano to go up. The landscapes are so surreal that seem otherworldly, a desolate but impressive landscape. Towards the end of the climb the trail is a little steeper, but still suitable for everyone.
When you get to the top you will be amazed by the immensity of the crater of the volcano, which almost does not fit in the photos. But that will not be the only thing that will surprise you, because just above, to our surprise, there were many squirrels running around. They are very cute and some seem almost domesticated but according to what we read they are an invasive species on the island. You will see signs everywhere asking not to feed them but unfortunately almost nobody pays attention to them.

We leave you with a graphic proof of our friends the squirrels They are clearly approaching because people are feeding them, don't do it! We were just watching how they play with each other, it is a bit hypnotic if you are not used to see them. Besides, you have to be careful with them because bite.

Once the summit is crowned and after having circled the crater, we can say that is totally worth it the route. We do not know if it is one of the most impressive of the Canary Islands, but if you have not seen many, we really liked the experience.
Once we had started our descent, as we had been left wanting more, we decided to return by the Red Mountain. A mountain that is right next to the volcano that offers a beautiful view of the village of Lajares from the heights. As you can see in the photos the landscape is totally Martian, we were amazed.

The option of going down Red Mountain is only recommended if you are in good physical condition or if you are adventurous as there is not much trail and the descent is a bit slippery, we would not say that it is for everyone.
