What to see in Pampaneira

Located in the heart of Poqueira Ravine in the Alpujarra of Granada is one of the three white villages that form the famous triangle together with Capileira and Bubión. With its cobblestone streets, tinaos (the typical passageways that connect the houses) and facades decorated with colorful flowerpots, it is the perfect destination for a rural getaway.

If you like nature, here you have access to some of the best ones hiking trails of the area. And if you are more into enjoying the atmosphere, you will love to get lost among its squares, fountains and craft stores.

How to get to Pampaneira

Pampaneira is located at about 75 km from Granada and to about 50 km from the tropical coast The visit can be done as an excursion. The visit can be done as a day trip from the capital or as a perfect weekend getaway, and there are different ways to get there that we tell you now:

By car
The best way to get there is by car. From Granada, you have to take the A-44 until Lanjarón and from there continue to Pampaneira. The road has many curves but the views make up for it.

By bus
There are buses from Granada that stop in Pampaneira, but the frequency is not very high. It is operated by the company ALSA and the trip takes about 2 hours. Not suitable for people who get dizzy.

From other nearby towns
If you are staying in Bubión or Capileira, you can reach Pampaneira on foot in a few minutes 30-40 minutes on well-marked trails.

What to see in Pampaneira in one day

Pampaneira is a small town with a lot of charm and the good thing is that, even if you only have one day You can see the most important things without rushing and enjoying the atmosphere. Here are the places we liked the most.

Liberty Square

Upon arrival, the Liberty Square We thought it was the perfect place to start getting to know the town. It is the center of everything: here are the Santa Cruz Church the city council and several stores and bars with terraces. We sat in one of them to have a coffee and immediately noticed how quiet Pampaneira is, even with tourists strolling around.

If you go on a weekend or during the high season, you are likely to encounter some flea market of local products. We came across one where they sold cheeses, sausages and honey and we ended up taking a small cheese with us, like good local foodies.

Santa Cruz Church

The Santa Cruz Church is, as we mentioned before, right on the square and, although it is quite simple on the outside, it is worth entering. It is a building of Mudejar which was built in the 16th century over an old mosque and its baroque altarpiece and the structure of the roof caught our attention.

If you happen to coincide with a local holiday, you may see the church decorated with flowers and banners especially during festivals such as the Virgen del Rosario in October, which is the patron saint of the town.

The fountains of Pampaneira and its legend

Throughout the village you will find fountains that come down directly from the Sierra Nevada, but one of the most curious ones is the San Antonio Fountain (o Chumpaneira Fountain), famous for the legend that says that if you drink from it, you will get married soon. Many couples who have visited Pampaneira say that the legend has been fulfilled, so if you do not want to risk, better look at it from afar (the sign says that you get married whether you want or not hehe).

Beyond superstition, the water of this fountain comes directly from Sierra Nevada and it is very good. Pampaneira is full of similar fountains, some more hidden among the streets, so we recommend you to take a look while you walk around.

Strolling through the Barrio Bajo and the Calle del Silencio

If there was one thing we loved about Pampaneira, it was its narrow cobblestone streets. The area of the Barrio Bajo is one of the most beautiful, with its white houses decorated with colorful flowerpots and the famous tinaos These covered walkways link the houses and create natural shadows.

We were recommended to look for the Silence Street When we arrived we understood why it has that name. It is one of the quietest and most photogenic, with antique wooden doors and whitewashed walls. We liked it so much that we stopped for a long time to take instagrammable photos.

Workshops and craft stores

One of the most authentic souvenirs that you can take with you from Pampaneira are its artisan products. The jarapa carpets a traditional weaving of the Alpujarra made with antique looms. Many of the village stores sell these colorful carpets and other handmade products.

There are also many ceramics, leather y gastronomic products. If you like good food, get ready because you will want to take it all.

Abuela Ili Chocolate Factory

If you have a sweet tooth, you will love this place. La Abuela Ili Chocolate Factory is a small workshop where they make artisan chocolate with natural ingredients. As soon as you enter, the smell of cocoa fills everything, and it is impossible to resist trying one of their tablets.

We bought one of dark chocolate with orange and another with almonds We regretted not having taken more. The best thing is that they let you try different flavors before choosing, so we advise you not to go in a hurry.

Viewpoints overlooking the Poqueira Ravine

One of the most impressive moments of our visit was when we climbed up to one of the viewpoints at the entrance of the village. From there you can see the whole Poqueira Ravine with Bubión and Capileira in the background, and, if the day is clear, the mountains of Sierra Nevada.

We stayed there for a while just enjoying the views and the fresh mountain air. If you like to take pictures, this is the perfect place to capture the essence of the Alpujarra.

Another viewpoint that we loved was the one near the Pampaneira washhouse. We went up there almost by chance and we were surprised by how quiet it was, with an incredible view of the village and its flat roofs covered with launa.

What to see and do in Pampaneira and surroundings

Pampaneira is a charming village, but if you have time, it is worth it explore its surroundings. We combined the visit with a little hiking and some excursion to nearby villages The truth is that we really liked this area of the Alpujarra.

Poqueira Ravine Route

If you like nature, this is your place. From Pampaneira there are several hiking trails that go along the Poqueira Ravine and the Sierra Nevada mountains. We did a part of the trail that connects Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira and it was a very cool route with views.

The way up is not very difficult and in a little more than half an hour we arrive at Bubión where we stop to rest and have a drink on a terrace with spectacular views. Then we continue to Capileira which is a little higher and has breathtaking viewpoints. If you do a circular route, the route is about 10km long and it is done in 3h and a half at a good pace. Excursion to Soportújar

Soportújar is a small town that has turned its history into a tourist attraction. It is said that here settled ancient witches and warlocks The town has been able to play with this legend to create a unique atmosphere.

We had already visited Soportújar We have visited it on another occasion and we highly recommend it: streets full of references to witchcraft, sculptures of witches, steaming cauldrons and even a cave that reminds us of the house of Baba Yaga. By car from Pampaneira you can reach it in only 20 minutes although along the same curvy roads that are found throughout the Alpujarra.

Visit Bubión and Capileira

If you have time, it is worthwhile to complete the visit to Pampaneira with a trip to Bubión and Capileira the other two towns in the Poqueira Ravine. Before we have told you about the route on foot but you can also go by car.

Bubión is the quietest of the three villages. Its cobblestone streets, tinaos and white houses create a very authentic atmosphere, without so much tourism. Some points of interest are the Church of the Virgin of the Rosary with its brick belfry, and the Alpujarra House Museum which shows how the traditional houses of the area used to be.

Capileira The highest village, and the one that for us has the best views of the valley. You can go up to the Perchel viewpoint From here you can see the whole ravine with Pampaneira and Bubión below. Its streets are full of fountains, craft stores and bars where you can continue eating alpujarreño dish.

Relaxing at the Lanjarón Spa Resort

One of the best excursions that can be made from Pampaneira is a trip to Lanjarón a town known for its medicinal waters. It is located at 30 minutes by car approx, and in addition to being famous for its bottled water, it also has a historical spa where you can enjoy thermal treatments and spa circuits.

We did not have time to go, but it was recommended to us several times. The Lanjarón Spa uses water that flows directly from springs in the Sierra Nevada and is said to have beneficial properties for the skin and circulation. They offer relaxation circuits with thermal pools, water jets, saunas and steam baths as well as massages and other treatments. If you feel like disconnecting in the middle of nature, it seems a perfect plan to end a day's route through the Alpujarra.

Where to eat in Pampaneira

Tips for visiting Pampaneira

After our visit, there are some tips that we believe may be useful to make the most of the trip and avoid unforeseen events. Pampaneira is a small town, but there are details that can make a difference in your experience.

Where to park in Pampaneira

If you go by car, arrive early especially on weekends and holidays. Pampaneira has a public parking at the entrance of the village right next to the main road. It is the largest and the best option if you can find a place, but it usually fills up quickly. There are also other smaller parking lots:

• Roadside parking area If the parking lots are full, it is common to see cars parked on the margins of the A-4132, although in some sections the slope is quite steep.
• Parking next to the San Antonio Fountain A small parking area in the lower part of the village, ideal if you want to start your visit from a less busy area.
• Parking in the upper part of town The hotel is further away from the center, but with direct access to some of the trails that connect with Bubión and Capileira.

We arrived early in the morning and found a place without any problem, but when we left we saw cars driving around looking for parking.

Best time to visit Pampaneira

We went in autumn and found it to be the best time: pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery with the autumn colors of the mountains. At winter It can be quite cold, although if you like the mountain atmosphere, it is a different experience. At summer Temperatures can be high, but being in the mountains, it is not as stifling as in Granada capital.

If you have a choice, we recommend avoid weekends The city is more touristy and the charm of its quiet streets is lost a little bit during the high season (long weekends or Easter).
